Information for the Self-Employed

Self-employed individuals can build up retirement savings in a tax-efficient manner by making contributions equal to 1.53% of their annual income, which they can access once they cease their self-employment or freelance work. Depending on the type of work, participation is either voluntary or mandatory.

BONUS Vorsorgekasse

Advantages

Whether voluntary or mandatory—in either case, you’re creating a
tax-efficient retirement plan for your future:

  • The contributions you make are fully recognized as business expenses.
  • Profitable and sustainable investments in BONUS are exempt from KEST.
  • Upon retirement, you can receive a tax-free pension or have your retirement capital paid out in a lump sum, subject to a 6% withholding tax.
  • All contributions made are subject to the statutory gross capital guarantee. BONUS guarantees 100% of all contributions made, with no deductions.
  • In the event of death, the retirement capital is distributed in equal shares to the spouse or registered partner and the dependent children, or it becomes part of the estate if there are no beneficiaries.

Information for

Business owners and “newly self-employed” individuals with mandatory health insurance under the GSVG are legally required to participate. After you begin your self-employment, you have 6 months to select a pension fund. If you do not make a selection, you will be assigned to a pension fund at random.

Contributions to the self-employed pension plan amount to 1.53% of the contribution base for mandatory statutory health insurance (capped at the maximum contribution base) and are collected by the Social Insurance for the Self-Employed (SVS) together with health and pension insurance contributions, and then forwarded to the selected pension fund for assessment and administration.

The voluntary pension plan for self-employed individuals is also available to all Austrian attorneys for a period of 12 months from the start of their self-employed legal practice. The contribution is a fixed amount equal to 1.53% of the annual maximum contribution base for social insurance and is collected directly by BONUS once a year in the fall via SEPA direct debit. Once you have decided whether or not to participate, this decision cannot be reversed for the remainder of your career as a lawyer.

Become a New Customer

If you’re a self-employed individual starting a business, you can complete this process in one step for both yourself and your employees. If you don’t hire employees until a later date, you can simply notify us by providing the contribution account number of the relevant ÖGK regional office. If you’re starting out as a freelancer, you have 12 months from the start of your self-employment to decide whether to enroll in the self-employed pension plan. For your employees, however, an enrollment agreement for the employee pension plan would be required in any case. In this case as well, enrollment in both the employee and self-employed pension plans can be completed using a single enrollment agreement form.

Switch to BONUS

Switching to BONUS is very easy. Fill out the membership agreement from the Downloads section and email it, along with the required identification information, to kundenservice@bonusvorsorge.at. Once we receive your authorization to switch to BONUS, we’ll handle all the necessary paperwork and notify you once the switch has been completed as of the respective fiscal year-end on December 31.

Account Consolidation

If you have an active account with BONUS into which contributions from an employee or self-employed pension plan are currently being made, you can have this account combined with pension entitlements from other pension funds, provided that no contributions have been made to the old pension funds for at least 3 years.

Here you will find a form for account consolidation; simply sign it and send it to us along with a copy of your ID. We will check on your behalf whether there are any balances in other pension funds and whether these can be transferred. As soon as BONUS has received the transferred amounts, we will confirm receipt of the payment to you.
