Information for Employees

Employers are required to pay 1.53% of gross pay as employee pension contributions to the relevant social insurance agency for all employees who have entered into a (new) employment relationship since January 1, 2003. The social insurance agency forwards these contributions to the selected pension fund for administration and investment.
Under the “Abfertigung NEU” system, the contributions paid by the employer are vested and cannot be forfeited, regardless of the reason for termination of employment or the number of contribution years. Your pension fund invests the contributions with a focus on maximizing both security and returns.

Advantages

Vesting of Contributions

Regardless of how your employment relationship ends under the NEW Severance Pay System, the employer’s contributions can no longer be forfeited.

100% Capital Guarantee

The contributions made are 100% capital-guaranteed at any time upon withdrawal, regardless of investment results or calculated costs.

Survivor Benefits

In the event of death, the severance pay is distributed in equal shares to the spouse or registered partner and the dependent children, or it becomes part of the estate if there are no beneficiaries.

Tax Benefits

By transferring funds tax-free into a pension insurance plan or into a pension entitlement in a pension fund, you can secure a tax-free supplemental pension. In the event of a lump-sum payment from the pension fund, the preferential tax rate of 6% applies.

Electronic Account Statement

With the amendment to the Occupational Pension Act for Employees and Self-Employed Persons (BMSVG) regarding digital annual account statements, the industry-wide transition to environmentally friendly electronic delivery took place in 2025. We recommend that you use the login credentials printed on your annual account statement to register for the customer portal or request a registration code. Alternatively, you can also access the customer portal using ID Austria. In the customer portal, you’ll stay up to date on contributions made, investment returns, and your monthly account balance, and—if you have authorization—you can securely and conveniently access your funds directly through the portal.

Account Consolidation

If you have an active account with BONUS into which contributions from an employee or self-employed pension plan are currently being made, you can have this account combined with pension entitlements from other pension funds, provided that no contributions have been made to the old pension funds for at least 3 years.

Here you will find a form for account consolidation; simply sign it and send it to us along with a copy of your ID. We will check on your behalf whether there are any balances in other pension funds and whether these can be transferred. As soon as BONUS has received the transferred amounts, we will confirm receipt of payment to you.

Options for Disposal

Upon termination of an employment relationship, you are entitled to access or receive payment under the following two conditions:

  1. Contributions were made on your behalf for at least 36 months (regardless of the number of employment relationships—the periods are combined), and in addition,
  2. the employment relationship was terminated by the employer or by mutual agreement.

General options for withdrawal exist

  • if no contributions have been made to an Austrian pension fund for the past 5 years, or
  • upon retirement

Below, you’ll learn more about your entitlement and your options for accessing your balance.
